Russia has declared that a ceasefire in Ukraine, without a comprehensive and lasting settlement, is unacceptable. This stance was reported by RIA, highlighting Moscow's concerns that a premature cessation of hostilities could lead to a resurgence of conflict with even more severe consequences.
According to RIA, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that while Russia acknowledges the United States' desire for a swift ceasefire, this approach is insufficient for Moscow.
"We can recognize with sufficient confidence the desire of the American side to move towards a quick ceasefire," Ryabkov said.
However, he emphasized the dangers of such a move:
"But ... a ceasefire without a long-term settlement is the path to a swift resumption of fighting and a resumption of the conflict with even more serious consequences, including consequences for Russian-American relations. We do not want this."
Ryabkov further elaborated on Russia's position, stressing the necessity of addressing the underlying issues driving the conflict:
"As of today, we have no further understanding... We need to find a long-term solution, which, in turn, must necessarily include an element of overcoming the root causes of what happened in and around Ukraine."
In summary, Russia's stance is that any ceasefire agreement must be part of a broader strategy to resolve the core issues of the conflict, ensuring a durable and stable peace, while also preventing further strain on Russian-American relations.
